Tuesday 23rd July - Mitchell (Neil Turner weir) – Staircase Range

A late start today 9.30am hit the road, freezing night but not for me snuggled in my sleeping bag.  A beautiful morning, sunny and no clouds.  Heading to a free camp Barry & I found on our last trip up here.  25km sth of Springsure called Staircase Range.  Stopped beside the road and got a load of firewood for tonight.  Not one car on this road lovely & peaceful.  Still no clouds in the sky and keeping my eyes peeled to see if I can spot any Emus.  Last trip I saw a Mum with 8 chicks.  Great names of properties out here, Tooloombilla, Womblebank & Walhallow just to name a few.  Turned a bend and there on the side of the road at a Kangaroo roadkill were 4 magnificent Eagles.  Stopped to try to get a photo but they flew off and wouldn’t come back while we were stopped there, and damm the camera wasn’t ready anyway.  It is now on my lap waiting!!!.  Big wildlife day today, 2 camels in the paddock and then over a rise to see an echidna in the middle of the road.  Barry had no time to stop and it went right under the car, luckily missed all the wheels and came out the back unscathed. Nice camp for the night with jaffles for dinner and a great fire going.  May stay here again tomorrow, will decide in the  morning when we see what the day is like.
